GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX doesn't work

I modified "/etc/default/grub" file to fix the resolution of the GRUB
> splash screen and Ubuntu adding the following lines:
>> GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x720

I know that the option ‘GRUB_GFXMODE’ set the resolution of GRUB splash screen but I want to keep this resolution for this virtual machine.
