An el-cheapo USB memory stick should do the trick. Maybe even a old
feature cellphone, provided it mounts as a USB mass storage device (never
tried it, but why not...)
Also, you can install the server:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-13.10-server-i386.iso.torrent
it's quite small. You'll have to bring in all the GUI stuff later, but
that's not so bad. Just be sure you know ahead of time what to install :)
xubuntu-desktop
not sure what else you need. lightdm?
