You could install Lubuntu first - the x86 image [1] is only 696M big and
should fit on a CD. Then you could install the package "ubuntu-desktop"
and select the appropriate session type at the login screen.

OTOH, if you could not burn the MiniCD image, you may have problems
burning this image as well.
