You'd mentioned 13.10 earlier.

gsettings and dconf work for 12.10/13.04/13.10/14.04.

For 12.04, you have to use gconftool-2.

>From some old notes:

gconftool-2 --type int --set
/apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/icon_size 32

Try

gconftool-2 --get /apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/icon_size
