Weird application menu behaviour

OK, so I'm using Unity (with Compiz eye candy). Yes, Unity sucks etc
etc, but I'm drinking the koolaid as fast as I can and so far, with
Compiz, it's not too painful.
But there are two things in particular that ARE too painful. They are
related, so fixing one will probably fix the other.
1: The application menus are not on the application windows. They have
flown, MAC-like, to the main task bar at the top of the screen. If I
lived with standard click-to-focus, this would be less of a problem, but
I use "sloppy" focussing, so if the mouse passes over any other window
on its way up to the task bar, the menu I get is not the menu I want. Is
there any way, in Unity, to have the application menus appear on the
application windows?
2: Eclipse won't show me the drop-down menus! That is, I can see the
top-level menu on the task bar (File, Edit etc) but if I click them,
nothing happens. Sometimes, a grey rectangle will drop down, and some
options - those with sub-menus) are visible, while the other options
remain invisible (or possibly grey on grey). Obviously these menus are
not usable.
BUT: If I press "Alt-F" for the File menu (for example - the others work
too), the file menu pops up, perfect in every way. Except that it is
hanging off the window title bar rather than the main task bar, it works
exactly as expected. I just can't get to the menus via mouse.
Since I spend most of my life in the Eclipse IDE, this is making me vewy
vewy sad.
Any ideas? I've been through every tweak I can find, no luck.
Regards, K.
