13.10 and compiz - rotate cube shrinks viewport?

I've just upgraded to 13.10 and installed compiz. Everything seems to be
in order - I've got wobbly windows now :-) - but my all-time favourite
bit, the rotating cube workspace switcher, doesn't work properly!

If I enable the "Desktop Cube"and "Rotate Cube" items, the viewport
(everything to the right of the launcher and below the task bar) shrinks
about 10%, leaving a black border around it. The mouse works, but is
mis-calibrated by about the same amount - I have to click up and to the
left of where things are. If I disable the two items, everything snaps
back to where it should be (without the rotating, of course).

The really irritating thing is that it worked for a while, then
"something happened" and now it doesn't work.

Stumped I am. Any clues?

Regards, K.

PS: yes, workspaces are enabled, and I've got four of them.
