ya, thanks ive seen that in my searching as well, but didnt try it.
i actually removed --purged nvidia-settings before this and that didnt
help either.
this is as you suggested above
steve at steve-MS-7508:/etc/X11$ sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
steve at steve-MS-7508:/etc/X11$ sudo nvidia-xconfig
WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
steve at steve-MS-7508:/etc/X11$ gksudo nvidia-settings
ERROR: Unable to open X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing.
ERROR: Error querying target relations
