2 TB external HD does not mount any more. How to save it's data?

There's a good chance the drive is dead. If possible, use the smartctl -a
command to view what's going on with the drive. However, in order to see
SMART info, it has to be enabled in the computer's bios. 

 

Drive's should never require occasional formatting to make them work.
