I usually recommend that people use OS X but I've moved four people
from Windows to Gnome 2 then Unity (my parents) or straight to Unity
(a friend and my next-door neighbor). They're all happy.

You're underestimating people's flexibility and adaptability.

It's IT types who are too wedded to their habits and their desktop
setups and who freak out about UX changes, not the average user.
