Hmm, a missing space at the second command was the problem ... now you 
have a link to /home/archives/var/cache/apt/ probably in your home 
directory which you can remove. And now please run the correct ln 
command with a space between "archives" and "/var":

sudo ln -s /home/archives /var/cache/apt/
