+1 for Xubuntu unless like me you LOVE the Unity interface then Ubuntu 
works fine (if not quite as fast) on a similar spec machine <Acer Aspire 
5720, dual core 2.5gib ram inbuilt Intel graphics>

It's a very personal choice though ;)
