USB memory stick question

Do I understand it right that if you boot from USB, the USB stick 
becomes /dev/sda and the harddisk becomes /dev/sdb? From your previous 
mails it seems that you are using the 256MB USB stick to boot the 
machine and it doesn't boot from the harddisk. Is that correct? Maybe we 
can find a solution without using a Live system, if you explain the 
situation a bit more detailed.
