Double-click to select word not working

Hi,

today I upgraded a friend's machine to 14.04. When I wanted to do some 
jobs in a terminal I noticed that I couldn't select filenames by double-
clicking those names. And selecting an entire line by triple-clicking 
didn't work either. I was a bit puzzled because this feature works on 
all the other *Ubuntu machines I know. Further experiments showed that 
it is not limited to the terminal but doesn't work for any application. 
My friend told me that this feature had never worked before.

Is there a config file which determines if double-click to select words 
can be switched off?
