14.04

When I boot up 14.04 I get an otherwise blank screen with the message:

"error: malformed file, press any key to continue". 

Pressing a key allows booting to continue, but one wonders what the
problem is.

dmesg is full of stuff like:-

Apr 19 21:51:13 infinity kernel: [  551.332383] status interrupt: 00 02
Apr 19 21:51:13 infinity kernel: [  551.364405] status interrupt: 00 02

Any one else seen this?
