Ubuntu on Lenovo Laptops - exernal USB devices

One of the many problems I need to solve before I can transfer the 
laptops to ubuntu is he need for an external dvd writer. Two of the 
laptops have build in CD r/w DVD ROM drive. The other tow have no 
drives. I have a lenovo  external cd r/w, DVD ROM drive.but this does 
not let me burn DVDs.

Is there an external DVD R?W drive which will work with ubuntu on lenovo 
laptops?

Is there a list of hardware which has drivers for ubuntu?
