My Unity just got frozen today, I did:
1- Login anyway using lightdm;
2- control + alt + f1 (go back to tty1);
3- sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
4- export DISPLAY=:0
6- control + alt + f7 (go back to X)
7- Within xterm window, run: dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
8- setsid unity
Maybe that helps!
