I use neither lightdm or gdm, and also have this grey screen. For me it
happends when gnome-shell starts up. It might be part of a different gnome
program such as gnome-session starting up.
I am also slightly confused about what exactly you mean by `grey gnome
desktop'. What exactly does it look like?
