I have. So long as you don't have any dependencies, you're all right.
One method is:
[1] install old version & all its deps
[2] remove old version
[3] install newer version
[3b] cross fingers and hope it doesn't have newer deps.

Well, yes, on both counts.
For mainly standalone stuff, alien works surprisingly well. Sometimes,
alien followed by a `apt-get install -f` will get you there, too.
