Yes, if you don't want to access the shares from random Windows 
machines, NFS is the better solution IMHO. NFS uses the same file 
permissions as the other Linux file systems. And even if you want to 
access shares from Windows, it is possible (at least for XP there is 
"Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX" as a free download). Have a look 
at <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo> for a setup 
guide. Although it is meant for Ubuntu, it shouldn't be much different 
for the Debian machine.
