That to me says he wants to boot his copy of XP, on one actual
hardware drive, under the other OS, Ubuntu, on a separate hardware
drive.

That is unambiguous. It means "no, it can't be done."
Posted /after/ Nils Kassube already told him how to do it. It *can* be
done and you said it could not.
I am not arguing whether it's possible to turn a hardware installation
into a VM - that is called a "physical to virtual migration" or P2V
for short. Yes this is possible, but it is not what Noah asked.
