Window 8 in efi mode and Ubuntu in legacy bios mode

Do you have reinstall media for Win8/8.1?

If you do, I would suggest nuking it, enabling BIOS emulation,
repartitioning the hard disk with MBR (as per Colin's excellent
advice), reinstalling Windows and /then/ trying Ubuntu again.
