Hi,
Many thanks for all your answers! This is now solved thanks to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot and grml-rescueboot I
was able to boot from the .iso using grub, then install to sdb using the
installer!
I now have a fully functional 13.10 install without SMART errors!
grml-rescueboot is now on the default apps list to install from now on!
