May I assume by "live" you mean "online"? As opposed to installing totally
disconnected from inet - as I did, from a CD burned from a download - an
ISO creation?

The wifi problems I experience are not consistent. I believe them to be
caused not by the Lenovo R60e laptop I use running Ubuntu 12.04LTS since
July 2012. Yet I keep an open mind, never say never!

Are free-wifi locations typically not good connections? Unreliable?

I experienced, what few connections I initially made, as good wifi
connections, even before converting to Ubuntu from Windows XP Pro SR3. The
Ubuntu "Try It" before install worked fine immediately, & when finally
gaining the opportunity after installation - the Ethernet cable was no
problem - it worked quickly.

After reading this, I considered the possibilities of an Ubuntu NW Mgr
problem causing wifi headaches for months now. So I installed Wicd &
uninstalled the 12.04LTS NW Mgr as suggested. I see no real difference.

The immediate problem & question is:

Wicd - the command line "--no-tray" or "--tray"; no matter what, it works
the same! I get Wicd loaded on bootup. What tray is supposed to display an
icon? I don't find it! I only find Wicd in Dash! No matter what I do in
"Main Menu" or "Startup Applications", I find no tray icon!

The other problem is, wicd is unable to scan & find anything until I press
"disconnect all" & "find a hidden network".

Then it works fine!
