Scanner (Canon n1240u) fails with "invalid parameter"

I'm using distribution 12.04 (French language distro). I also get an 
"invalid parameter" using Xsane with a HP printer.

However, I installed the package gscantopdf and it works perfectly. It's 
part of the official distro. Despite its name it gives you the option of 
scanning with different dpi values to different formats, such as tiff, 
and the pdf option includes an option for ocr.
