Assuming your package lists are sane:

  sudo apt-get install -f
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Please attach the full output of these two commands (or use a pastebin
like paste.ubuntu.com and include the link), then we can see better
what's actually happening.

Aptitude is not the recommended package manager for Ubuntu.  I'm not
sure why, but my personal experience with it was definitely poorer than
dealing with plain old apt-get.
