First - did you remove the lightdm.override file? Second - it appears
LightDM is hanging, so that writes log files to /var/log/lightdm. What
do those say?

Sorry to hear you've had all this trouble, Kevin.... this is
bizarre... lightdm.override should have done what you wanted it to do,
straightforward.
