The first obvious question is: how do you, or he, know that he has a virus?

If he does have a virus it must have been detected by a virus scanner he
has installed in which case why didn't that scanner remove the virus
after it was detected?

Which leads to the second question: what exactly is it that you want to
do with a Live CD (of any description) - to backup his data you say?

But how are you going to do this? And onto what are you going to backup
his "data" (what exactly is his "data")?

And thirdly, why do you want a Live CD? Why not use the SystemRescueCD?
Afterall, you will need to mount his Windows partition(s) and then copy
that "data" somewhere - and you will have a much better chance of doing
this with something like SystemRescueCD than a Live CD of anything-Ubuntu.

My 20c worth.
