the good thing about a locally running cloud instance (which usually
means a local machine in your house that runs a VM where the cloud lives
in) is that VMs have the nice feature of doing complete disk image
snapshots ... it only takes a few seconds and you have a full backup
easily, so it doesn't matter if the machine goes up in flames. as long
as you have such a disk image snapshot around you will always be able to
restore the exact state the VM was in before it died and you can even
easily clone the whole thing by just copying the snapshot to another
cloud VM ...

"cloud" doesn't necessarily mean you give your data to a foreign entity,
ubuntu-server ships with easy personal cloud setups for your home
network since several years ;)
