Logger for user started programs

Hi ,
I  am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS and i want to log all the processes started by
a user and log only the processes not the sys calls and other daemon
processes.

I used auditctl from auditd and acct but they make the system slower.What i
basically want is something like ps ( that gives the snapshot of all the
running processes .

If there are any other alternatives please let me know or if any API which
i can used to code.
