I have yet to strike the situation where the installer/partitioner 
formatted a partition when you did not 'instruct' it to format a partition.

But I wonder if I could introduce a novel idea to you because of your 
fear which you express above?

I wonder if you have heard of something called 'doing a backup'? Many 
people have tried it and surprisingly it works and is most beneficial 
following that embarrassing moment when things go - without any rhyme or 
reason of course - poof! Marvellous thing this, 'doing a backup'. I 
highly recommend it :-) And anyone, young or old, can do it :-) .
