Live CD also fails.

The "extra devices" were a replacement DVD writer and a replacement
hard disk.  I can't imagine how those could cause this, but I'll try
disconnecting the DVD drive later when I have some time (the disk has
/home on it and "can't" be disconnected - sort of - I know, it can,
but it's a pain I'd rather forgo.)
