As TB uses mbox, I would expect it to also get in trouble with 2GB in a 
single folder. I think your best option would be to setup a local imap 
server on your box and copy / move all your mails to that server. Then 
you can access your mail with any modern mail client, even kmail2 when 
it is usable. If you later decide to try another mail client, you don't 
need to move to another mail format again. At [1] is a detailed 
description how it can be done. Ignore the whining and adapt the 
procedure to your preferences.

BTW: Did you try the kmail2 version coming from the Kubuntu-backports-
ppa [2]? For me that version is good enough, much better than the 
original version coming with 12.04.
