Here is a bare minimum teat, which I would do first:
1) go to BIOS setup and reset it to Factory defaults (or similar);
2) still in BIOS setup, set SATA mode to AHCI;
3) boot from a Live CD/USB and run `hddparm -tT <dev>`, where <dev> are
your disk "drives" (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc.).
