Is there any easy way to 'scale' displays?

Neither, I haven't bought the alternative monitor yet! :-)
The question is generic though, given a wide screen monitor I want to be
able to display two 100x65 character terminal windows on the display
without having to resize everything when I move from one monitor to the
other.
It's easy enough to do 'manually', you change the font size in the
terminal window so that it occupies the right space on the screen. I
want to have windows that (somehow) take account of the screen
resolution and size themselves accordingly.
