As far as I can tell there's no difference in the mail I see on my
laptops, as opposed to what I see on my desktop. When I open/read/delete
a message in my GMail on one machine, it shows me the same thing on any
of my other computers. But I IMAP all my accounts, (and I have quite a
few: 1GMail - 2Yahoo - 1AOL - 1Hotmail/MSN - and 1Mail.com account) All
of them act the "same" in that if I go to a web-interface and manipulate
any message it reflects it in the Thunderbird app. Originally a few
people had advised me to use Evolution as an e-mail client, but I prefer
TB. I would say, if you really want to use it, go ahead, and try it out,
if your mail is on the GMail server there's no real danger of breaking
anything.
