Auto-logon failure

How does the system reject the password? Is there an error message like 
"wrong password, try again" or does it try to start the graphical system 
and then returns to the login screen?

When in terminal mode, please check the files /var/log/syslog 
/var/log/Xorg.0.log and $HOME/.xsession-errors if there is a hint why 
the login failed.
