It is preferred that they be hosted elsewhere; generally somewhere
like http://paste.ubuntu.com/ for text files (you can use the tool
'pastebinit' to speed up upload there).

This is because attached or inline every subscriber must download your
additional file before they (or their mail client) can decide whether
it was something they wish to read. With a pastebin service they can
choose to not click on the link if they're using a metered or limited
bandwidth connection.

The usual concerns about this are archival - how will people with the
same problem find this thread in the future? Generally you'll find
that if the precise wording of a file is telling, it will find itself
quoted in a reply.
