Is it an ARM? If it is not, then in the BIOS menu, there should be an option to turn off SecureBoot (which is UEFI). When SecureBoot is on, it only allows specific operating systems to boot (which in this case, is Windows 8), or operating systems with a signed key. Canonical has created a signed key for Ubuntu, but I don’t know if it is in Ubuntu 12.10 or not. Which version of Ubuntu are you wanting to install?

Subject: Can xubuntu dual-boot with Windows 8?
I replaced my wife's failing laptop. It's a Toshiba with Windows 8.
The BIOS does not seem to like my Ubuntu and Xubuntu DVDs. It won't
boot them. I think it's a new security thing. This can make it hard
to set up dual-booting.
I want to get in there with Ubuntu, but I'm clueless about how to proceed.
Pointers, please?
