I understood what you said - you connected the drive by usb. My suggestion
was to put the drive back where it was before. This means not connected by
USB. Then boot the Live dvd.

 

It would be even better to connect the drive to a known good pc by
connecting it inside to the motherboard's controller - again, not by usb. 

 

But as was suggested, it's possible the drive is dead. 

 

If you have to replace it, in future keep an eye on the new drive's health
from time to time. That's what SMART tells you.
