Not sure why you have this problem.  I use Xubuntu 12.04 and my
synaptic starts just fine from the main menu.  I also have a keyboard
shortcut for it that invokes "/usr/bin/gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic" and it
always comes up just fine.

Of course you have to invoke it with sudo (or gksu).

I don't use backupPC or Power Manager, and I don't really care what
names are used in the menus, though I can understand why most users
would rather see, say, "Terminal Emulator" than
"/usr/bin/xfce4-terminal."  We techies like the details, but most
users don't.
