installing kernel 3.4

I am trying to make my Asus 1025 ce have full 3d (it only runs 2D now).
If I install linux kernel 3.4 will that make a difference?  Can I even do
that given I am running 12.04.2?

12.10 can not run on this machine near as I can tell from searches.  Does
installing 3.4 in effect convert 12.04 to 12.10?
