Laurie,
Try these two commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
When you run the first, it will ask for your password and then will connect to the internet and update it's source lists. The second command will launch the updates and will need you to confirm that you want to update by pressing y

Hi hope I'm on the correct list.
I just installed a dual boot with windows.When it starts looks like terminal opens,tells me there are updates.
Line has my computer name,followed by what looks like a dollar sign.
I am presuming I need a command to get the updates.Could someone tell me what is the command please.
Fairly new to Ubuntu.
