..or you could just open the files you want to protect via alternate
viewers: if they're video files, play with mplayer from a terminal, if pdf,
open with a non-default application, etc.

I'm guessing it's not exactly security here, if you want something secure,
place them on an external encrypted drive or maybe simply on a drive that's
not mounted at boot time.
