Set different screen resolution for/in media players?

I just bought a new monitor with 2560x1440 pixels. My system is not fast 
enough to scale video to that size at 60 frames per second, so to play 
video fullscreen I need to set the screen resolution to a lower value 
(like 1920x1080) and let the screen itself handle the scaling.

I was wondering if I can set a specific screen size for media players like 
Totem or VLC, so I won't have to change the system settings manually every 
time. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or do media players always 
have to use the system screen settings?
