Unix copy method not working for gnome terminal

I opened gnome terminal and fired up a vim session, typed the
following and copied hte entire screen, including the vim menu bar at
the bottom:
this is typed inside a vim session in gnome terminal

And just in case, I did the same using standard vi, not vim:
this is typed inside standard good ol' vi, not vim, again inside a gnome
terminal window.

Seems to work just fine...
