I've upgraded several very old machines from 11.04 -> 11.10 ->12.04 (my
wife & three kids use Ubuntu on old HP machines; well, the wife's got a
Macbook but...) & haven't experienced any problems whatsoever. They're
all using wireless too (Netgear dongles on the HPs & Apple Extreme on
the Macbook). It just worked out the box™
I believe Classic is still a login option on 12.04; it was removed in
12.10 I think. I've never used it. I'm the only person on Earth who
likes Unity :-)
I haven't tried one step 11.04 -> 12.04 but Ubuntu's usually pretty good
at upgrades. Depends on the state of health of your current system.
You could always backup /home, /etc & whatever else you need & do a
clean install & then restore your data.
Cheers,
Phil...
