xubuntu 12.10 on core duo imac - only boots via alt/option key then select disk

I was working on this today.  I installed a fresh xubuntu on a core duo
iMac and it booted fine.  I activated the firmware password and rebooted
and it started giving me the no boot disk icon.  I then removed the
firmware password and not it boots fine again.  Go figure....??

Is there any way around this?
