DigiKam works great for Canon cameras. Just plug the camera's cable into 
a usb port and up it comes!

It would not be a very comfortable move, I'd recommend installing 
kubuntu-desktop after your initial install and add pauvcontrol for ease 
of setting up sound. this is the way I set-up friends and family and 
needed tech support is almost non-existant!  You'll find those programs 
in synaptic package manager.  Then on the login screen just choose kde.
