I was doing pretty good till I got to the install:
root at coyote:~# apt-get install google-earth-stable
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
google-earth-stable is already the newest version.
So I opened up synaptic & refreshed it, google-earth is a version 6
something. I nuked it, and will put it back in.

That actually works with the f% placeholder from the cli!
And the about says:

Google Earth
6.0.3.2197
Build Date
5/13/2011
Build Time
5:16:07 pm
Renderer
OpenGL
Operating System
Linux (2.6.32.0)
Video Driver
Mesa Project
Max Texture Size
4096x4096
Server
kh.google.com

I expect I'll have to fix the menu though, this is ubuntu 10-04.4 LTS with
just enough kde installed to run kmail. I may be the only one on the
planet doing that but I've been using kde and kmail since about '98, old
dogs (78) & new tricks yadda yadda.

Recent updates to qt4 seem to have broken dbus, but that is another thread
I already posted about.

This worked, and I thank you very very much NoOp, whoever you are. :)

Cheers, Gene
