resetting dvd drive parms

It seems that I've wrecked more cd/dvd players by screwing with the 
country code. I've been all over the hdparm man page and the internet 
looking for a nice SAFE hdparm option to reset the drive to factory, 
whatever that might be.

Has anyone done this without wrecking it? That I can do myself. Thanks! Ric
